Eat your greens: Panasonic invests in Singapore’s indoor farming
It is the first licensed indoor farm in the country.
Japan’s Panasonic Corp. is best known for its television sets and home theatre systems but has recently started selling to a chain of Japanese restaurants in Singapore fresh produce.
In a report by Reuters, Panasonic is pushing farming technology in land-scarce Singapore, aiding the latter in its goal towards lesser food imports.
The facility has a small production capacity of 3.6 tonnes annually and produces 10 types of vegetables such as mini red radishes and baby spinach.
Reuters adds that Panasonic’s 248 square metre farm is located inside a factory building on the outskirts of the city, where standard fluorescent lighting gives way to a pinkish-purple glow from LED lights brought in to nurture the plants.
Panasonic aims to grow more than 30 crop varieties by March 2017 and account fro around 5 % of local vegetable production.
