Collins Aerospace wins Aerospace Award at the Malaysia International Business Awards 2021

Its LeastWasteWay-B787 large galley heat exchanger increases monthly average shipment and sales for their LGHX projects.

Collins Aerospace has won the Aerospace Award at the Malaysia International Business Awards 2021 for its work on their LeastWasteWay-B787 large galley heat exchanger system.
The company was tasked to brainstorm and come up with ideas to help reduce or eliminate any non-value added activities during the entire Least Waste Way - B787 Large Galley Heat Exchanger (LGHX) process. Eventually, their goal was to increase the output for monthly average shipment and sales for LGHX products and improve repair turnaround time to their customers.

With Collins Aerospace carrying out the Least Waste Way event of this product from 9th to 13th March 2020, the team members conducted time observation for every LGHX process and tabulated the results into the load chart for segregating the value added and non-value added activities to identify areas of improvement. Several non-value added activities and motion waste were identified during the event.

As a result, they proposed to relocate and combine the LGHX repair and testing area and reviewed layout designs in relocating the workstation, test equipment, tools and fixture into a collective work area that reduced the walking distance travel by 65% (187.9 meters).

Additionally, the team came out with an innovative idea in designing a new 2-in-1 test rig which consisted of a similar test rig system as existing with the inclusion of a built-in water tank.
This helped to shorten the travel distance from 427.94 meter to 47 meters, which
equated to 89% improvement (69% of travel time improvements from 9 minutes to 2.8 minutes). Also, the new 2-in-1 design of the test rig required less space, optimising and saving space for other operating activities. This new layout promoted one-piece flow to avoid batching of units in each operation process.

As a result, there was a reduction of travel distance by 89%. There were also improvements on labor hours, which added revenue generation to the site and increased output.

In the end, the monthly average shipments for the Boeing 787 Large Galley Heat Exchanger (LGHX) were increased by 20% and the reduced movements contributed to time savings. Moreover, the Repair Turn Around Time was reduced by one day.
