TES wins SBR's Technology Excellence Award for IT services

The company established a lithium-ion battery recycling facility with in-house innovations proprietary technology.

As the modern world quickly evolves and the demand for information technology rises, industry players must find the delicate balance between the thirst for scientific and technological progress and the need for sustainability. Failure to do so imposes restricted growth in both society’s growth and development.

The earth’s present environmental crisis is a testament to that, which reiterates why scientific progress, technological processes, technical change and rapid economic growth must come hand-in-hand with environmental protection.

Therefore, Singapore Business Review (SBR) lauds companies that can achieve this balance through their groundbreaking products, services and schemes. A worthy array of winners has been listed and acknowledged in the SBR Technology Excellence Awards (TEA) 2020 for the distinction and innovation, success and influence as well as dynamism of their work.

As one of the biggest players in Singapore’s information technology (IT) lifecycle services industry, TES is constantly driven to provide bespoke solutions that manage clients’ commissioning, deployment and retirement of IT assets.

Since its foundation in 2005, the company has been redefining the entire IT lifecycle management concept by reducing environmental impact. TES continues to invest in sustainability efforts and recently completed construction and testing of a battery recycling facility in Singapore (TES B), which provides increased recovery rates and a closed-loop solution.

For this, TES garnered the Computing Award for IT service in the recently concluded SBR TEA.

The battery recycling facility incorporates a trailblazing recycling process, which uses trademark in-house technology and equipment. That starts with auto punching machines and shredders breaking end-of-life batteries into triturated substances. A series of separators are deployed to retrieve the copper, aluminum, and blackmass, which is then followed by a chemical treatment process to recover commodity-grade cobalt and lithium.

The company’s exclusive mechanical hydrometallurgical method enables increased retrieval and remains environmentally safer and superior to pyrolysis and cryogenic processes. The entire procedure is environmentally-friendly, as it does not release secondary contaminants such as heavy metals and volatile organic compounds into the atmosphere.

“As the first facility here to recover precious metals from batteries using a new hydrometallurgy process, TES B allows Singapore to offer closed loop battery recycling services, thus serving domestic needs and enhancing the regional value chain for e-waste management,” said Assistant Managing Director Damian Chan in a press release on the facility’s establishment.

“In addition, as electric vehicle adoption and solar deployment scale up in Singapore, TES B and TES’s efforts in second-life energy storage solutions (ESS) will contribute to our battery recycling and energy management ecosystem,” he added.

The facility is a symbol of e-waste innovation and what is possible with technology and vision. It has achieved the highest commodity-grade recovery rates and has effectively created a complete closed-loop solution for lithium-ion batteries. In doing so, TES is a contributor to the circular economy by recirculating these precious materials back into the forward manufacturing supply chain.

Provided that stockpiling waste batteries surfaces potential danger and environmental undesirability, the need for recycling lithium ion batteries rises.
End-of-life lithium-ion battery recycling, as exhibited in TES’s facility, offers essential economic benefits, prevents new mineral extraction and provides resilience against weak links and supply risks in the entire lithium ion battery supply chain.
