TM R&D'S innovative“EWAR” solution recognised at Malaysia Technology Excellence Awards

The company’s internally-developed smart solution expedites the detection of viral diseases.

Telekom Research & Development Sdn Bhd (TM R&D), the innovation arm of Telekom Malaysia Berhad (TM), was recently recognised at the Malaysia Technology Excellence Awards under the Information Management – Computer Software category. This is the third award won by TM R&D in the Malaysia Technology Excellence Awards since the launch of the event in 2019.

The awards programme, organised by Singapore Business Review, lauds businesses that take the leap and lead when it comes to engineering trailblazing projects, digital services, rebuilt schemes, and technological endeavours. The winners were judged according to their distinctiveness and innovation, success and influence, as well as vigor.

The award was conferred to TM R&D in recognition of the company’s performance and achievements in developing its innovative solution, Early Warning, Alert and Response or EWAR. Launched this April amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, EWAR is an all-in-one contactless thermal screening solution that can detect high temperature, one of the symptoms to watch out for in cases of viral disease.

TM R&D’s CEO Dr. Sharlene Thiagarajah said that this is indeed a proud moment for the TM R&D and TM Group. “We are excited that our internally-developed smart solution was recognised and winning the award strengthens our position as a leader in research, development and innovation. We will continue to introduce smart digital solutions that suit business requirements towards enhancing their productivity,” she added.

EWAR enables real-time monitoring and early detection of high body temperature amongst 10 to 15 individuals per second with minimal human interaction, simplifying the isolation and treatment process for confirmed cases. EWAR comes with a cloud based software and mobile application which makes this innovative solution unique. When any individuals who enter the premises record a high body temperature, an alert will be triggered and a notification will be sent to the designated person in charge. The system also allows storing of individual temperature reports over a cloud system where it can be accessed remotely for tracking or analysis. If more than one camera is installed at the premise, the EWAR dashboard can provide consolidated live and historical data analysis of all cameras in the building.

TM R&D believes that society has an important role in curbing the spread of COVID-19. Thus, EWAR is a timely mechanism that is recommended for crowded areas such as schools, airports, and hospitals. Being non-intrusive and easy to set up, this "all-in-one" contactless thermal screening solution with a high accuracy of +/- 0.3℃ can be deployed in any location that records daily heavy foot traffic such as shopping complexes, office buildings and train stations, just to name a few.

Currently, EWAR has been installed at more than 150 sites across several industry verticals and has gone regional to help keep businesses safe beyond Malaysian shores. The solution has been installed at TM’s customer touchpoint outlets (TMpoint), Menara TM, TM Convention Centre (TMCC), Menara Kuala Lumpur, Menara Alor Setar, the quarantine and treatment centre for COVID-19 cases at Malaysia Agro Exposition Park (MAEPS) in Serdang, large and mid-size office lobbies, schools, hotels, Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) payment counters, various sales galleries and Gamuda Land construction sites.

TM R&D is the centre of innovation for TM focusing on developing innovation that progresses humanity. Growing from strength to strength since 2016, TM R&D has won seven (7) globally recognised awards over the last two (2) years. With more than 2,800 Intellectual Property Rights (IPRs) and 1,400 digital assets generated to-date, TM R&D’s innovations, all developed in-house, cut across multiple verticals such as Telco, Retail, Logistics, Agriculture, Healthcare, and Education with safety and productivity as the top priority. As the organisation continues to expand beyond connectivity and into new value-added digital and smarter platforms, its role in TM has become more prominent and exciting.
