Universiti Sains Malaysia nabs Malaysia TEA award for Digital - Education
JORaN offers over 30 different part-time job categories within the campus for students to earn extra income. So far, since its inception, more than 400 students have benefitted from this effort.
Public research institution Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) has won the Digital - Education award at the recently concluded Malaysia Technology Excellence Awards, presented by Singapore Business Review.
In its third year, the awards event lauds exceptional companies that have successfully pioneered IT products, solutions and innovative technology projects in their respective industries to boost Malaysia’s fast-growing economy.
On 4 September 2019, USM soft-launched the JORaN mobile app, which stands for job opportunity recruitment and networking, is a platform that brings together USM students, student entrepreneurs and all departments in USM in an employer-employee environment.
A first amongst Malaysian universities, an “employer” (student entrepreneur or unit in USM) can choose their “employee” (a USM student) based on the endorsement and comment from past “employers” via the platform. An employer can also search for an employee by submitting the description of their needs and requirements of the job.
JORaN offers various part-time jobs within the campus for students to apply and earn extra income. There are over 30 different types of job categories from waiters to research assistants, and it is available to download for free on both iOS and Android devices
USM launched JORaN in conjunction with the registration of new students for the 2019/2020 academic session after realising that many university students were looking for part-time jobs to raise money for their studies. The concept behind the innovation originated from Professor Dr. Aldrin Abdullah, Deputy Vice-Chancellor of Student Development Affairs and Alumni, USM. The app was fully developed by USM students Asamoah Kwaku Acheampong, Danny Hartanto Djarum and Lai Beng Keong under the supervision of Assoc Professor Dr. Nurul Hashimah Ahamed Hassain Malim.
