How can SG boost social cohesion in society? Wong explains

It will take deliberate measures to overcome differences in the society.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance Lawrence Wong said Singapore will not leave to chance the push for a social cohesive society as the country faces obstacles such as conflict of international politics.

In a speech at the International Conference on Cohesive Societies, Wong said they will implement deliberate and consistent initiatives to make sure that they will balance competing interests in the society.

“This starts with something very fundamental – the idea of fostering contact and interaction between people of different backgrounds,” said Wong.

Amongst Singapore’s efforts, Wong discussed that public housing policy will allow people of different races to live in the same neighbourhood to foster a common identity.

National schools are the common formative experiences for all young residents regardless of their backgrounds, Wong also said.

“Whether it is playing together, eating at the same hawker centres, or going to the same schools, these shared experiences help our people see that they have more in common than they might have first imagined,” Wong told the attendees of the conference.
