
Manufacturing output jumped 7.4% in June
All sectors recorded growth, led by biomedical manufacturing at 13.8%.
Singapore’s manufacturing output jumped by 7.4% in June 2018. Excluding biomedical manufacturing, output grew 5.9%.
According to the Department of Statistics, biomedical manufacturing output jumped 13.8%, thanks to higher medical technology (1.9%) and pharmaceuticals output (17.4%), helped by higher production of pharmaceutical and biological products.
Transport engineering output accelerated by 12.4%, mainly led by increased projects in the marine & offshore engineering segment (28.3%), strong work volume in the aerospace segment (4.8%). Meanwhile, the land transport segment declined 28.1%.
Electronics output expanded 7.1% as semiconductors, other electronic modules & components, and infocomms & consumer electronics segments recorded growth of 10.2%, 9.2%, and 5.4%, respectively.
Precision engineering output climbed by 2.7% thanks to growth in precision modules & components segment (15.4%). By contrast, the machinery & systems segment declined 3.7%, with lower production of refrigeration systems, semiconductor-related equipment, and mechanical engineering work.
Meanwhile, chemicals output inched up by 1.6% due to the petrochemicals and petroleum segments which grew 14.3% and 5.1% respectively. The specialities and other chemicals segments declined 2.6% and 6.2% respectively.
General manufacturing output marginally rose by 0.5% as the food, beverages & tobacco segment grew 7.3%, on account of the higher production of infant milk products and beverage products. The miscellaneous industries and printing segments fell 6.1% and 7%, respectively.
On a three-month moving average basis, manufacturing output rose 10.2%. On a seasonally adjusted month-on-month basis, manufacturing output increased 3.9%. Excluding biomedical manufacturing, output fell 0.6%.
