More Singaporeans delay saying 'I do'
Married couples are having their first child later as well, contributing to the general decline in Singapore’s total fertility rate.
The National Population and Talent Division of the Prime Minister’s Office reported:
Singapore’s total fertility rate (TFR) has been on a general decline. The last time that the TFR of the resident population (comprising Singapore Citizens and Permanent Residents) was above the replacement level of 2.1 was in 1976. The resident TFR was 1.20 in 2011.
The declining trend in TFR is a serious and complex issue, and can be attributed to the following key factors:
a. More people are staying single or getting married later, and
b. Married couples are having their first child later and having fewer children.
