Singapore and Malaysia kick off first meeting on maritime boundary delimitation

They will build a sub-committee to address the legalities of the delimitation.

Singapore and Malaysia held their first meeting on 13 May in Singapore, according to a press release by Malaysia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The negotiations were led by Singapore’s permanent secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Chee Wee Kiong and Malaysia’s secretary general of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Dato’ Sri Muhammad Shahrul Ikram Yaakob.

The Committee has agreed to build a sub-committee to address the legal and technical aspects of delimitation. This subcommittee will be co-led by the director-general of the Department of Maritime Affairs of the Malaysian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the director-general of the International Affairs Division of the Singapore Attorney-General’s Chambers.

“In line with the recommendations of the Malaysia-Singapore Working Group, the committee also agreed upon practical modalities for operational agencies to avoid untoward incidents on the ground,” the announcement noted, adding that all the recommendations under the working group have been successfully implemented.
