Eight years in the making: $950m Jurong Rock Caverns officially launched today
It’s SE Asia’s first underground liquid hydrocarbon storage facility.
Eight years after it was first conceived, the Jurong Rock Caverns (JRC) was officially launched today by Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong.
JRC is Southeast Asia's first underground liquid hydrocarbon storage facility. It is located at a depth of 130m beneath Banyan Basin on Jurong Island, and cost over $950m.
This major infrastructural development enables the optimisation of large tracts of surface land for higher value-added activities, and provides a storage space required for liquid hydrocarbons such as crude oil, condensate, naphtha and gas oil.
The facility provides 1.47 million m3 of oil storage space will be made available to the oil storage industry. At 27m high, 20m wide and 340m long, the caverns stand as tall as a 9-storey building.
