Singapore-Malaysia Electricity Interconnector upgrade completed

The interconnector can now handle around 1,000MW of electricity flows.

The upgrade of the electricity interconnector between Singapore and Malaysia has been completed, doubling the capacity of electricity flow it can carry and enhancing regional energy connectivity.

In a statement, the Energy Market Authority (EMA) said the interconnected can now accommodate a bidirectional electricity flow of around 1,000 megawatts between the two countries.

EMA also said that the interconnector is used for the cross-border power trade in the Lao PDR-Thailand-Malaysia-Singapore Power Integration Project that imports up to 100 megawatts of renewable hydropower from Lao PDR to Singapore through interconnections in Thailand and Malaysia.

The interconnector has enabled mutual energy transfer during power system disturbances since 1983.
