Google unveils e-payment app in Singapore

It merged the app with existing features in Android Pay.

Tech titan Google launched its own cashless payment app, Google Pay, in Singapore.

Google said that the app is just one part of what it plans to launch. “We’re currently working on bringing Google Pay to all Google products, so whether you’re shopping on Chrome or with your Assistant, you’ll have a consistent checkout experience using the cards saved to your Google Account. We’re also working with partners online and in stores, so you’ll see Google Pay on sites, in apps, and at your favourite places around the world,” it added.

The app can be used to see recent purchases, find nearby stores, and access rewards. A cards tab will also be available to allow users to view their credit and debit cards, loyalty programs, and offers. Google Pay can already be used on transit in cities such as Kiev, London, and Portland, with more coming soon.

The Wallet app is now called Google Pay Send in order to go with the Google Pay brand.

Google Pay joins many other companies that are launching their own e-payment platforms. The interest in fintech has resulted in the rise of new e-payment schemes in Singapore. Moreover, most consumers in Singapore now refuse to bring cash for payments, with 87% or almost 9 in 10 of them saying they prefer to utilise e-payments.
