Chart of the Day: SGX total share buyback for H1 2021 hits $368m
It was down from the 81 stocks buying back $663m in combined consideration in H1 2020.
This chart from SBR shows that the total share buyback consideration for the first half (H1) of 2021 amounted to $368 million, with 59 Singaporean companies conducting buybacks.
The buyback consideration was down from the 81 stocks buying back $663 million in combined consideration in H1 2020, largely attributed to volatility in March that year. The H1 2021 figure was up, however, from the combined $325 million buyback consideration in H1 2019.
Five Straits Times Index constituents, namely OCBC, Wilmar, SGX, ST Engineering, and Keppel Corporation, led the H1 2021 consideration tally. Combined, the 10 stocks made up more than 90% of the total buyback consideration, representing 0.04% of the $902 billion total market capitalisation of all stocks listed on Singapore Exchange as of 30 June.
In June 2021, 28 companies bought back their shares with a total consideration of $94 million, up from 21 companies buying back shares in May, with a total consideration of $91.1 million. Last month’s buyback consideration was also up from $12.6 million in June 2020.
