MAS unveils new coins under Chinese Almanac series

These will be issued 1 January.

According to a release, the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) launched the 2014 Year of the Horse Almanac Coins, 2014 Uncirculated Coin Set and Singapore First Almanac Coin Series Puzzle Coin Set. These coins will be issued on 1 January 2014.

The coins are part of the third Chinese Almanac coin series. The image of the horse is integrated with ancient Chinese seal characters in a design that combines tradition with modernity. The animal is symbolised by the Chinese characters of the “Heavenly Stems and Earthly Branches”. The design incorporates a peony which is a symbol of blessing and festive cheer.

The coins will come in nine versions, including a 1 kg coin made of 999 fine silver that was first introduced in the 2012 Year of the Dragon coin collection and a Silver Piedfort Proof Coin featuring the horse in colour. Selected premium sets will include a unique 8-sided floral-shaped ingot featuring a pair of horses emerging from a field of peonies.

MAS will also issue a series of puzzle coin sets featuring designs of past Chinese Almanac series. The set comprises a centre coin surrounded by 12 coins using a 3-way interlocking concept. For the 2014 issue, each of the 12 surrounding coins depicts an animal from the first Chinese Almanac series while the centre coin features a peony flower.

The obverse of the coins bears the Singapore Arms with the year 2014.
