Chart of the Day: Supply of hotel rooms feared to rocket 17% to 9,432

That's in the next 4 years.

According to CIMB, the supply of hotel room nights available in Singapore has grown at a CAGR of 3.7% in 2007-13. Over the next four years, the new supply of hotel rooms is expected to be high at 9,432 rooms, translating into c.17% of total current stock.

The majority of the upcoming supply is scheduled to come online over the next two years, resulting in an average CAGR of 5.7% over this period.

Here's more from CIMB:

The bulk of the new supply is expected to be concentrated in the midrange (47% of total supply) and upscale (28% of total supply) segments.

In terms of location, an estimated 40.5% of the upcoming supply is located outside the city centre while 36.7% is expected to be located in/near the prime business district.

Despite the relatively exciting calendar of events in 2104, the performance of hotels in general across Singapore is expected to remain flattish, largely a result of the high supply of additional rooms over the next two years.

Having said that, with the demand and supply balancing out, there is potential for upside surprises if the global economy makes a better-than-expected recovery, which could support higher corporate and healthier tourist spending, in turn benefitting Singapore’s hospitality industry.
