SDC, WWF-SG unveil sustainability guidebook for establishments

The guidebook instructs businesses to align operations with sustainable practices.

The Sentosa Development Corporation (SDC), in collaboration with the World Wide Fund for Nature Singapore (WWF-Singapore), has launched the Sentosa Playbook for Reducing Disposables to help hotels, attractions, and food and beverage operators in Sentosa to understand practices, monitor progress, and push boundaries through new sustainable technologies.

The guidebook outlines sixteen measures for reducing disposables, grouped into six categories (carrier bags, takeaway food containers, disposable tableware for dine-in, single-use bottled water, paper products, packaging waste, and amenity kits) across establishments in Sentosa.

Thien Kwee Eng, SDC CEO, said the Playbook would instruct "island businesses to align their practices with an island-wide approach towards tackling waste and working towards a Sustainable Sentosa."

"We believe that successful implementation in Sentosa will inspire more players in the tourism industry to rethink single-use plastic products and explore innovative sustainability solutions," said R. Raghunathan, WWF-Singapore CEO.

Meanwhile, member establishments of the Sentosa Carbon Neutral Network pledged to remove single-use bottled water from the guest rooms, dine-in, takeaway, and event settings by the end of 2023.

The commitment would reduce bottled water usage per year by at least two million bottles and allow the establishments to switch to piped water.
