
Shangri-La Hotel, Singapore appoints Michael Cottan as Vice President
Played important role in Shangri La Hotel, Jakarta in 1994 and Pudong Shangri-La, Shanghai opening in 1998.
Shangri-La Hotels and Resorts has appointed Michael Cottan as vice president and general manager of Shangri-La Hotel, Singapore. In his new role, Mr. Cottan is responsible for the success of three properties in Singapore, namely Shangri La Hotel, Singapore, Rasa Sentosa Resort, Singapore and Traders Hotel, Singapore, as well as five other Shangri-La properties located in Australia, Canada, Fiji and Japan. He reports directly to Shangri-La’s President and Chief Executive Officer Greg Dogan.
Prior to his appointment, Mr. Cottan held a similar position at Shangri La Hotel, Bangkok, which he assumed in August 2008.
With more than 30 years of hospitality experience, Mr. Cottan has played an instrumental role in the growth of Shangri-La Hotels and Resorts. After joining the hotel group in 1993, Mr. Cottan moved rapidly through the ranks and played an instrumental role in achieving many of the company’s milestones, including the opening of Shangri La Hotel, Jakarta in 1994 and Pudong Shangri-La, Shanghai in 1998. Another milestone was the successful re-branding of ANA Harbour Grand Hotel to Shangri-La Hotel, Sydney in 2003, which marked the first stage of Shangri La Hotels and Resorts’ expansion into non-Asian locations. During his 17-year tenure with the hotel group, Mr. Cottan has managed major Shangri-La hotels in Hong Kong, Malaysia and most recently, Thailand.
Mr. Cottan, who is a British national, started his career in food and beverage operations. His passion for the hospitality industry took him to 12 countries across five continents.
