3.37m viewers watched Olympics 2012 on MediaCorp
This translates to 68% of viewers who stay tuned to 560 hours of sports.
In a release, over the 17-day period of the London 2012 Olympics Games, 3.37million viewers, which translates to a reach of 68% of total viewers (aged 4 years and above), watched a whopping 560 hours of world-class sporting action across MediaCorp channels.
As Singapore’s Official Free-to-Air Broadcaster for the London Olympics, MediaCorp aired the telecast from 27 July to 13 August on three channels: Channel 5/HD5, Channel U and okto. Not only were Singapore viewers able to catch the thrills and spills in full high-definition on HD5, those who wished to listen to the Chinese commentary tuned in to Channel U which offered dual-language audio option – Chinese - on top of the default English commentary during primetime. The most-watched programme was the Opening Ceremony (encore) on 28 July which garnered 754,000 viewers.
Remesh Kumar, Senior Vice President, English Entertainment Productions and team leader for the MediaCorp London production team said: “While we had a choice of 48 live feeds, we only had three channels with limited timeslots to carry them. Hence very educated editorial decisions have to be made with priority given to Team Singapore events and popular items such as swimming, athletics, gymnastics and diving. At the back of our heads, we had to be mindful of the Singapore time zone being seven hours ahead of London.
He added: “Our core team was very small compared to the larger outfits from Britain, US, Australia and China, but they were all very experienced and dedicated, and it helped that the Games was the best organised Olympics ever.”
MediaCorp’s comprehensive coverage of the London 2012 Olympics Games extended beyond television. TODAY newspaper dedicated daily pages to keep readers up-to-date with the latest news with a special focus on Team Singapore. Radio listeners across MediaCorp’s 13 radio stations also received Olympics updates, reviews and match tallies. Netizens also flocked to the Olympics microsite in xinmsn.com which featured news, results, live reports, photo galleries and fun features like an interactive tour of the various Olympics venues. Total page-views to date reached a staggering 4.9million from 450,000 unique users.
