Singapore’s first news aggregation app attracts 1 million users in two years

Stay in the loop with news and lifestyle content from SBR and 600 other publishers.

Bringing over 600 leading publishers across more than 30 categories of news and lifestyle content may seem like a feat too huge to be accomplished. But SingTel made it possible through NewsLoop.

NewsLoop is a two-year old app creating a name in the mobile industry and has presence in more than five countries. Newsloop brings different stories sourced from renowned local and international newspapers, magazines and blogs.

SingTel embarked on a project to find out whether they could compete in the mobile news aggregator space - one already filled with leading media brands and innovative upstarts. According to a spokesperson, the SingTel team dived into a sea of data and research to find out if they had a right to play. They discovered that there was an untapped part of the news app market - an area in which SingTel feels it had all the right resources and know-how to enter. That is how ‘NewsLoop’ is formed.

NewsLoop differentiates itself from other news apps by being the first to cater specifically to the needs and interests of readers in Singapore.

NewsLoop is a news aggregation app that puts together news and lifestyle content from over 600 publishers all onto one app. The app offers content across more than 30 categories including National News, Food & Drink and Football. Some of the publishers onboard NewsLoop are Singapore Business Review, Reuters, Channel NewsAsia, Hungry Go Where, IS Magazine and more. NewsLoop also provides local media and bloggers with a new platform to reach a wider audience and earn additional revenue for their content.

The NewsLoop spokesperson notes that most of the news aggregation apps in the market offer western content and markets. There is no one aggregation app that focuses on hyper-local content in Asia. Other news apps, like the Straits Times and Channel NewsAsia only offered content from a single-media sources.

“Before NewsLoop, readers either relied on news aggregators that carried US-centric news or apps from single publications. In response, we built an app that would offer readers a one-stop shop for different perspectives of news and events in Singapore and around the world,” the spokesperson adds,

NewsLoop is free for download on iOS and selected Android devices. It currently has 1 million downloads globally on Android store alone. It also expanded the news offerings to cater to users from Australia, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, and Thailand.
