EMA seeks new proposal to assess Singapore’s geothermal potential

Singapore is in a region of high subsurface heat flow which could have heat resources.

The Energy Market Authority (EMA) released a request for a proposal for a non-invasive geophysical study to assess the deep geothermal resource potential of Singapore at depths of up to 10 kilometres for the country’s power generation.

In a statement, EMA said a holistic study will provide additional data to assess the potential of geothermal energy in Singapore and identify suitable locations for geothermal power plant deployment in the Lion City.

“The data and information availed through the study will also be used to assess the potential for subsurface geologic carbon sequestration in Singapore,” EMA said.

The call came following the localised exploratory studies conducted in northern and eastern Singapore. Past studies showed that Singapore is located in a region of high subsurface heat flow that could possess heat resources.

The exploratory study led by the Nanyang Technological University in July found heat from a depth of four to five kilometres in the Admiralty area which could be used for power generation.
