Number of women brand owners, inventors rising in Singapore: report

The proportion of women brand owners who registered trademarks rose to 23.4% in 2022.

More women are participating in intellectual property (IP) management and innovation in Singapore, a recent study has found.

Data from a recent Intellectual Property Office of Singapore (IPOS) study showed that the proportion of women among brand owners who registered trademarks has risen from 17.7% to 23.4% between 2016 and 2022.

The share of patents with at least one woman inventor likewise increased, rising from 21.6% to 34.0% between 2000 to 2021.

Whilst more women entrepreneurs are owning their brands, the Minister of State for Home
Affairs, Social and Family Development, Sun Xueling, said there “remains a disparity between men and women seeking IP protection.”

“IP plays an important role in transforming ideas into assets and as we celebrate the new products and services women help to bring to the marketplace and society, more also needs to be done to help women use the IP system to protect their work,” Sun said.
