SG eyes enhancement of key food distribution facilities
This is part of the government’s measures to prepare SG for future pandemics.
Singapore plans to enhance its major food distribution facilities, like the Jurong Fishery Port and Pasir Panjang Wholesale Centre, in preparation for future emergencies and pandemics.
“The Singapore Food Agency is carrying out upgrades to enhance the security, surveillance, and access control systems of our key food supply facilities. This would allow for better contact tracing in the event of a future disease outbreak and support the enforcement of control measures,” Senior Minister of State for Defence and Manpower Zaqy Mohamad said in his speech at the Parliament.
Mohamad said public sector agencies are also identifying other suitable facilities that can “meet possible crisis scenarios and better safeguard and operationalise sites for emergency needs.”
These include dual-use facilities that can serve both peacetime and crisis functions.
“Public sector agencies will also explore with private sector owners to potentially use a wide variety of private infrastructure for emergency housing. These include chalets, hotels, serviced apartments and exhibition spaces. One such example was how D’Resort@Downtown East was used as a Government Quarantine Facility,” Mohamad said.
