LawCanvas saves the day: Easy legal documents in under a minute
The founders revolutionized the legal industry despite having different backgrounds.
Business partners Daniel Leong, 29, and Mark Png, 36, have accounting and technology backgrounds respectively. They both ventured into the legal technology space with LawCanvas, a web service aiming to help businesses create legal documents quickly and easily. Daniel says it is so easy to use that anyone can create a Non-Disclosure Agreement (NDA) in under a minute.
“Whether you’re a law firm that produces tons of legal documents on a daily basis, or a small business that does them periodically, LawCanvas delivers automated contracts so that you spend less time messing around in Microsoft Word and more time with your customers,” he adds.
Daniel points out that existing legal documents software are often clunky and not intuitive to use because they’re built with a high emphasis on functionality and low emphasis on user experience. That is why LawCanvas puts a premium on good user experience, even making it the core of their product philosophy.
“Mark and I have spent countless hours cutting and pasting overseas legal document templates for use in our own projects. The issue is that doing so is frustrating and tedious and we'd much rather be working on our businesses. In order to solve our own problem, we built LawCanvas as a tool to help small businesses by providing legal document templates drafted by local lawyers,” said Daniel.
According to Daniel, when they saw the opportunity they decided to act on it despite not having any formal education on the legal industry. He adds that aside from newly-found friends along their journey, they have found an advisor, Ms Chin Hooi Yen - the founder and director of Polaris Law Corporation, to guide them along the way.
LawCanvas has raised S$60,000 from the MDA iJAM grant and Crystal Horse Investments. Currently, they are devoting a lot of time to developing ‘LawCanvas for Enterprise’ – designed to help organizations with a richer feature-set than what is generally available to their current small business users.
Daniel reveals that LawCanvas’ next step is to have a full technical development team to build the features they have planned, and raise the necessary funding to make this possible.
