What are the key features of the new Copyright Bill?

If passed, the bill will be operationalised in November 2021.

The Ministry of Law announced that the Copyright Bill has been tabled for first reading in the Parliament on 6 July, making it one step closer to becoming a law.

The bill will replace the current Copyright Act, updating it based on current methods in content creation, distribution, and usage.

It would introduce new rights and remedies including making the first owner of commissioned work the copyright holder by default, and acknowledging creators or performers for materials that are made public.

Lawfully accessed copyright works can be used for computational data analysis and educational purposes.

The bill has been written in plain English to enhance clarity and accessibility.

If passed, most of the provisions will be operationalised by November 2021.
