Chart of the Day: Singapore’s Pay TV market losing signal to Netflix and Hulu

2015 looks terrifying without major sporting events.

SingTel added just 1k new subscribers in the quarter, while StarHub added about 4k, but the worry is that ARPUs appear to have hit a plateau as had been expected by analysts.

According to OCBC Investment Research, SingTel's ARPU has flattened out at S$41 since 2QCY14, and likewise for StarHub's ARPU, which has flattened out at S$51.

ARPU is expected to stay at its level, as there are no major sporting events for 2015.

The major threat would be from OTT (Over-the-Top) streaming. With the use of VPN (Virtual Private Networks), viewers will be able to subscribe for services from online providers like Hulu, Netflix, to get access to a larger library and even sports content like BPL; this at significantly lower price points.
