It has the highest number of walkers than any other city in the world.

Tokyo is setting the world’s example in environment-friendly commuting, according to a Kantar research.

It achieved a score of 84.7 in the Green Commuter Index, ahead of Beijing and Singapore which scored 78.6 and 73.3 respectively.

A low proportion of solo drivers against a high number of walkers, cyclists and public transport users helped Tokyo finish on top, Kantar noted. It has the most walkers at 18%, beating Manchester’s 16%.

Tokyo is not the only Asian city that was lauded for its green commutes. The study found that Beijing has the third highest number of cyclists after Amsterdam and Copenhagen.

Mumbai and Jakarta residents are heavily reliant on travel apps, using an average of over five. In contrast, mainland Chinese cities have lower travel app usage than the rest of the world since ridesharing services are already integrated with other apps like Baidu, Alipay and WeChat.

However, 39% of global commuters still prefer cars despite environmental concerns, whether for convenience, necessity, or status.
