New fuel economy labels tout most eco-friendly Singapore cars
Cars and light goods vehicles will be required to sport more detailed labels revealing each model's carbon emissions and fuel consumption.
This should help current and future car owners factor in the carbon emissions as well as long-run fuel costs when choosing models to purchase, said the Land Transport Authority. The new fuel economy labels will be rolled out starting 1 Jul 2012.
LTA sample labels show that each vehicle will be assessed based on its fuel consumption and carbon dioxide emissions. This will indicate the fuel efficiency and environmental friendliness of the vehicle. The lower the values, the more fuel efficient the vehicle is.
Each label will also display the rebate/surcharge amount for the vehicle model based on its carbon dioxide emissions, and the banding to which a vehicle belongs to under the carbon emissions-based vehicle (CEV) scheme.
The label will also carry a comparison meter that shows the carbon dioxide emissions and fuel consumption performance of the vehicle against other models in Singapore.
"LTA's aim is to help car buyers be more aware of the importance of carbon emission performance and fuel efficiency when buying a car. These measures will make such information more transparent and accessible to consumers. This will help buyers save money in terms of fuel costs and also reduce carbon emissions, which is in line with our objective of promoting an environmentally sustainable land transport system," said Mr Colin Lim, LTA's Group Director for Vehicle and Transit Licensing.
The launch of the revamped fuel economy labels are part of LTA's new role as administrator of the Fuel Economy Labelling Scheme, which was previously run by the National Environment Agency.
