Changi Airport’s passenger traffic soars 9.2% to 4.7m in April

Bolstered by air travel to and from SEA, Africa.

Traffic in Singapore Changi Airport soared in April 2016, as passenger movements during the month climbed 9.2% YoY to 4.79m.

According to Chang Airport Group’s release, the airport’s passenger traffic during the month was bolstered by double-digit growth in air travel to and from Northeast Asia, Southeast Asia, and Africa. This was mitigated, though, by soft performance on American routes.

Aircraft movements also took off in April, with a 4.3% growth to 29,460 landings and takeoffs. Meanwhile, cargo shipments increased 7.2% to reach 164,530 tonnes, compared to the same period last year.

CAG also reports that traffic between Singapore and all of Changi’s top 10 country markets saw increases in April. Japan, Malaysia, Thailand and Vietnam posted growth of more than 10%, while China traffic growth registered a robust 23%.

In addition, as at 31 May 2016, more than 100 airlines operate at Changi Airport, connecting Singapore to some 330 in about 80 countries and territories across the globe. CAG notes that with more than 6,800 weekly scheduled flights, an aircraft takes off or lands every 90 seconds.
