Chart of the Day: See the rise in Singapore’s commuter population

As the government continues to discourage private vehicle ownership.

The ratio of the average daily ridership divided by the Singapore population grew from 1.16 in 2009 to 1.36 in 2013.

According to a report by UOB Kay Hian, this increase in ridership penetration could be due to a larger proportion of the population taking public transport or each existing commuter making more trips.

UOB Kay Hian adds that either of these explanations bode well for the land transport sector and this trend is expected to continue given the government’s stance on discouraging private vehicle ownership.
