LTA kicks off public poll for 16 Thomson Line Station names
Voting is until 17 June.
According to a release, the Land Transport Authority (LTA) invites the public to vote for their preferred station name for 16 Thomson Line (TSL) stations. More than 4,000 suggestions were received from the public for the TSL station naming exercise conducted between 8 January and 17 February this year. In comparison, the station naming exercise for the 13 Downtown Line 3 stations collected 3,000 suggestions in December 2010.
Starting today (23 May), the public can vote for their preferred station names through the LTA portal at https://talk2lta.lta.gov.sg. The closing date is 17 June 2013.
Six of the 22 stations - Woodlands, Caldecott, Stevens, Orchard, Outram Park and Marina Bay – are excluded from this exercise as they will be in operation on other existing lines before the opening of the Thomson Line, and will be interchanges for the new line. For example, the Thomson Line’s Stevens station will be complete and operational on the Downtown Line by 2015. The Thomson Line is expected to be fully complete in 2021.
Results of the polling will be collated and the finalised names will be sent to SBNB for final approval before the official names are announced in August 2013.
Singapore’s MRT station names must fit one of several criteria: to help commuters easily identify where the station is located; illustrate the history and heritage of the station’s location; and reflect Singapore’s multi-racial and multi-cultural identity. Stations are not to be named after public structures, or commercial and residential developments
