LTA unveils upgrade plans for Sengkang Punggol LRT

It will be a 2-car system.

According to a release, the Land Transport Authority (LTA) will upgrade the Sengkang Punggol LRT to a 2-car system to increase its capacity and to provide a higher level of commuter service.

Over the years, ridership on the Sengkang and Punggol LRT has seen a steady increase, with a 10% year-on-year growth from 2008 to 2011. With more developments coming up in the area, ridership is expected to continue to grow.

To meet future demand, LTA will modify 16 of the 41 existing single train-cars to allow these train-cars to be coupled for 2-car operations. 16 more train-cars will also be procured. This will bring the total fleet size to 57 train-cars, thereby increasing the train fleet by about 40%.

System upgrading and modification works will start by the middle of next year. There will be no disruption to existing LRT service as upgrading works will be carried out during non-revenue hours. The 2-car train system will be commissioned for revenue service around 2016. With the upgrade, commuters will enjoy less crowding and a more comfortable journey.
