New electric car registrations rose more than twice the rate in 2021

It accounted for 8.4% of all new car registrations.

New electric car registrations make up for 8.4% of all new car registrations, which is more than twice the rate posted last year, Transport Minister S Iswaran said in a speech.

This figure, Iswaran also said, is over 20 times than the rate in 2020, as he also reiterated electric vehicle (EV) charging stations in the Jurong Innovation District. Once completed, this charging hub, which will house 250 EV charging lots, will be the largest in Southeast Asia.

Also, indicated in the speech is Singapore’s goal to electrify half their public bus fleet by 2030.

“That means 3,000 electric public buses on our roads by the end of the decade,” Iswaran added.

The Land Transport Authority also indicated that the carbon footprint of a single journey can be reduced by 85% if it shifts from driving an internal combustion engine car to boarding the Mass Rapid Transport (MRT).

With the goal of having 75% of all daily trips on mass transit, up from 64%, Iswaran said the government will also increase their MRT network by over 50% from 250 kilometres (km) to 360 km over the next decade.
