Is the Singapore fare formula fair?

A newly formed Fare Review Committee will investigate and possibly propose the lowering of public transport fares.

The committee -- which is composed of 13 members from the Public Transport Council, academia, consumer association, labor movement, and private and people sectors -- has been asked to review the effectiveness of the current fare adjustment formula.

It will also propose improvements to the formula and the overall framewrok for fare adjustments, said the Ministry of Transport (MoT) in a release.

The review will be completed and recommendations put froward to the Minister of Transport in early 2013.

"The revised fare review framework should balance keeping public transport fares affordable with the long-term viability of the public transport operators (PTOs) and should incentivise the PTOs to be efficient and encourage productivity improvement," said MoT.
