Singapore rail network to add 99 new trains worth $1b by 2019

They’ll have better propulsion systems and synchronous motors.

Singapore’s rail network will see the addition of 99 new trains worth $1b from this year to 2019, according to Transport Minister Khaw Boon Wan.

In his latest blog post, he detailed that out of the 99 new trains, 57 will be for the North South East West Line (NSEWL), 18 for the North East Line, and 24 for the Circle Line.

The NSEWL trains will have electric train doors that require lower maintenance and will eliminate air leakage problems associated with the old pneumatic doors. The operations data train door will be logged and stored for the maintenance crew to pre-empt door faults before they occur.

The trains will have better propulsion systems as well as more durable and reliable AC synchronous motors which will need less maintenance, Khaw asserted.

Additionally, rail engineers and technical staff are posted to the overseas factories where the trains are being built to monitor the entire assembly process and participate in train testing. This also aids the officers in furthering their experience and technical knowledge of the new trains.
