Uber unveils uberASSIST to cater to PWD’s needs
Drivers are also trained to provide assistance.
International transportation network company Uber Technologies Inc (Uber) introduced today a new option called uberASSIST for members of the community with different accessibility needs.
Levelfield Consultants, an organization that promotes the need for safe and accessible environments, will provide Uber’s top driver-partners training “on the necessary knowledge and safety requirements of people with different needs and can accommodate folding wheelchairs, walkers and scooters.”
However, Uber asserted in their report that uberASSIST vehicles are not equipped with ramps or lifts.
The Disabled People’s Association (DPA) Singapore, and The National Volunteer & Philanthropy Centre (NVPC), expressed their support for uberASSIST.
“DPA supports companies like Uber who are looking to see how their services can cater to a growing number of customers with mobility issues,” stated DPA Executive Director Dr. Marissa Lee Medjeral-Mills.
NVPC also lauds “Uber’s move to train their drivers to provide additional assistance to the mobility challenged,” according to Director Marcus Chee.
“Hopefully, this will encourage other companies to follow Uber’s lead and roll out more socially inclusive products in Singapore,” he said.
