Elektromotive secures £2.4m contract to supply UK rapid charger stations

First station coming by April 2014.

Singapore-listed Elektromotive Group Limited (Elektromotive) announced that its United Kingdom (UK) registered subsidiary, Elektromotive Limited (Elektromotive UK) has secured a £2.4 million (equivalent to approximately S$5.1 million) contract to supply up to 50 rapid charger stations across South East England.

The rapid charger stations will be part of England’s electric vehicle public charging network. Elektromotive UK will install and maintain the chargers. The first charger will be installed in April 2014 and it is expected that all 50 stations will be installed by March 2015.

The United Kingdom government supports the use of electric vehicles as part of its carbon reduction target and provides monetary and other incentives for local authorities to set up electric vehicle supporting infrastructure. The new contract is the result of a successful funding bid through Lewes District Council to the Office for Low Emission Vehicles (OLEV), which is part of the Department of Transport.

Elektromotive UK has also secured another two contracts for rapid chargers worth £0.5 million (equivalent to approximately S$1.1 million) for public charging networks in other parts of the UK. There is potential for Elektromotive UK to install up to 40 additional rapid chargers in other UK regions as a result of the current UK government funding under the OLEV scheme.

Mr Ricky Ang, Vice-Chairman and Managing Director of Elektromotive said, “The aggregate value of these contracts amounting to £2.9 million (approximately S$6.2 million) will have a significant impact on the Group’s financial performance in the new financial year commencing 1 April 2014. This augurs well not only for Elektromotive but also for the industry as a whole. It reflects the UK government’s commitment to building up the Electric Vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure to facilitate the adoption of EVs on a far wider scale. We are delighted to be a partner in this building process and we hope to replicate this in other parts of the world.”

Elektromotive is UK’s leading provider of technology and engineering solutions for EV recharging stations. Level 3 rapid-charge public-access points are a vital part of the infrastructure needed to support the take-up of electric vehicles to meet carbon reduction targets and lower air pollution in the UK.

“I am very happy that we have secured these contracts and look forward to working with our partners on these projects. A network of UK rapid chargers is a game changer for large-scale adoption of EVs. Being able to charge your EV in 20 minutes will make undertaking longer journeys a lot easier. This further secures Elektomotive’s future as a leading player in the global EV infrastructure market”. added Mr Calvey Taylor-Haw, Managing Director of Elektromotive UK.

Currently, motorists refuel their vehicles at well-located petrol stations. Likewise, it is important that electric charge points are set up at suitable points within a strategic road network, so that EV owners can recharge their vehicles conveniently. The rapid chargers being supplied for the current projects supply direct currents (“DC”) at 50 kilowatt per hour and can charge compatible EVs up to 80 per cent power capacity in 20 minutes.
