Sembcorp Marine bags contract to build Shell FPU in Gulf of Mexico
It will operate in the Alaminos Canyon Block 772 upon completion in 2022.
Sembcorp Marine has secured the contract to build a floating production unit (FPU) for Shell’s Whale field development in the Gulf of Mexico, according to a press release.
The Whale FPU is composed of a topside module and a four-column semi-submersible floating hull, with a combined weight of 25,000 tonnes. It will be integrated and commissioned on ground level at Sembcorp’s Tuas Boulevard Yard and will be attached to a 51-metre tall haul.
Expected to be completed in 2022, it will operate in the Alaminos Canyon Block 772.
The agreement foregoes Shell’s final investment decision for the full Whale project slated to be made next year, and arranges for the FPU to take advantage of synergies from the ongoing Vito FPU currently under construction also at Tuas Boulevard Yard.
Aside from the two FPUs, Sembcorp’s projects in the Gulf of Mexico include previous deliveries of eight semi-submersible drilling rigs and one semi-submersible hull.
The Whale FPU project is not expected to have a material impact on the net tangible assets and earnings per share of Sembcorp Marine for 2019.
