Love or money? S’poreans argue the real reason for Valentine’s Day celebration

Six in 10 S’poreans point to commercial pressure.

Singaporeans have a cynical view towards Valentine’s Day, with 63% saying that the occasion only gets celebrated because of pressure from commercial entities like greeting card companies.

By age group, YouGov said the least hostile to Valentine’s Day are those aged 18 to 24, saying the occasion is worth celebrating (30%).

They are, however, also the most sceptical about Valentine’s Day, with 67% saying that commercial pressure is the main reason for celebrating the occasion.

Older Singaporeans aged 45 to 54 (66%) and over 55 (61%) also view the occasion as a commercialised event rather than a “proper” one.

Compared to other countries such as Spain and Great Britain, Singapore is less hostile towards Valentine's Day.
