Software firm Tableau goes back to school with ‘classroom-style setting’ collaborative spaces
It also has acrylic poles to inspire employees express their creativity.
In time with the country’s 50th birthday, Tableau launched its new 50,000 sq.ft. regional hub at South Beach Tower in Singapore. Since it started its operations in Singapore in 2012, Tableau made it clear that they are well-positioned on empowering citizens and organizations in Singapore with the ability to see and understand their data by themselves.
According to JY Pook, vice president of Tableau in Asia Pacific, they set out to design the new office as an expression of the Tableau brand, which aspires to enhance the human intellect through its blend of technology, creativity, and collaboration spaces whilst fostering a sense of community.
As the company believes in the power of data for everyone, and staying true to Tableau’s philosophy, the new office features a modern workspace focused on its customers and employees with the main themes namely collaboration and creativity.
“True to Tableau’s global office design philosophy, the new Singapore office creates a sense of open community; it is intentional that none of the Tableau offices across the globe have meeting rooms around the corner, printers on two sides of a big floor, and also do not have multiple coffee joints on one floor – we want people to meet, talk and work together,” said JY.
The new office, JY said, highlights several spaces that encourage collaboration, as well as facilities for knowledge sharing in a classroom-style setting. The office also have a comfortable and colorful grand pantry that doubles up as a casual meeting space for all employees.
Tableau boasts of its smart technology theme with its collaborative workspaces. JY told SBR that the new office have hand sensors that automatically open the restroom doors, meeting room bookings happen electronically, and the office is equipped with similar video, telephone and conferencing equipment as all of their offices across the globe, all further enhancing collaboration and productivity in the office.
On the creative side, the new office features vibrant blue rugs along the walkways between workstations representing Tableau’s signature ‘scatter-plot’ vizzes. There are also acrylic poles that resemble histogram vizzes flanking their halls, starting from the reception area to the whole floor.
“These acrylic poles are meant to inspire employees to create great things, as well as to showcase a sense of discovery as you see different ‘viewpoints’ depending on where you stand. On the walls, you see colourful paintings done by our very own employees, further expressing the creativity and spirit of Tableau culture,” said JY.
As the company acknowledges the importance of personal workspace, the new office allows individual workspaces to be adjusted according to personal ergonomic and productivity preferences, with standing tables and adjustable chairs.
Although the management did not face any significant obstacles in the design and implementation of the new office, JY said that there’s one thing that remained as their topmost priority: how they make their people the center of focus at this new facility.
With Tableau’s dedicated Real Estate and Workplace team partnered with design firms and architects on this project, the company was able to to procure similar technology in their conference rooms, room reservation systems, video conferencing, and others for their employees to hit ground running, regardless of which office they are in, without having to relearn how to use it.
