A*STAR, Tumcreate collaborate for first island-wide integrated model for EVs

They aim to supplement Singapore’s 2040 vision for cleaner energy for vehicles.

A*STAR and TUMCREATE are working on a research project that supports Singapore’s planning for the transition to electric vehicles, the two companies' joint statement revealed.

The Singapore Integrated Transport Energy Model (SITEM) will be used to conduct an analysis of projected electric vehicle charging patterns and energy demand.

SITEM is the first high-fidelity, island-wide simulation of electric vehicle (EV) transport in the country that integrates multiple aspects of mobility and energy modeling, such as individual vehicle movements and the interaction of EV charging demand with electricity grid capacity. The project also aims to help in optimizing the placement of EV charging stations.

Advanced capabilities are used by the two companies, such as large scale complex systems modeling and optimization, high performance and distributed computing, advanced data and analytics, and grounded agent-based modeling of human behaviour.

Two primary simulation technologies were developed by TUMCREATE, the City Mobility Simulator to enable high-detail transport simulation and Multi Energy System Modeling & Optimisation, an advanced software framework.

Dr. Lim Keng Hui, executive director, A*STAR’s IHPC, said that this initiative shows the opportunities afforded by simulation and modeling in urban planning.

“The beauty of simulation and modelling in urban planning is that we can integrate with multiple real-world datasets to create realistic computational models of our city, and explore different designs to achieve the optimal outcomes before physical infrastructure upgrade is commissioned.”

Commissioned by the Science and Technology Policy and Plans Office and the Prime Minister’s Office, SITEM is intended to support policymaking on Singapore’s 2040 vision to phase out internal combustion engine vehicles and have all vehicles run on cleaner energy.
