IMDA launches a $30m research fund on sustainable tech
The initiative will focus on research and collaboration with industry partners.
The Infocomm Media Development Authority (IMDA) introduced two green computing initiatives to promote sustainable practices and efficient use of computing resources in the tech sector.
This is to support the increasing need to reduce carbon emissions from the computing and software sector as improving hardware efficiency is not sufficient to sustain carbon emissions.
One of the initiatives will use the $30m fund to pursue research on energy-efficient software design and function. It will also enable and invite collaborations with researchers to solve problems related to green computing.
The other initiative will invite industry partners to participate in green software trials to better understand how to develop green software, reducing energy use and IT costs.
The trials will provide IMDA with the data to create guidelines for the industry on developing green software.
Currently, IMDA is collaborating with industry partners to trial the standard in their live facilities. The agency also promotes green data centres to reduce emissions in the ICT sector.
