Scam alert: Ministry of Manpower warns of fraudulent emails, calls
The scammers are calling about foreign worker levy matters.
The Ministry of Manpower (MOM) has warned the public of scammers disguised as the organisation by using fake emails, among others.
In an advisory, the ministry told the public that the email of its Research and Statistics Department (MOM RSD) has been spoofed.
These emails appeared to be sent from MOM RSD (MOM), with a ZIP file attachment and password to access its purported content.
The ministry clarified that the RSD’s official email is mom_rsd@mom.gov.sg and that they don’t send emails with ZIP file attachments.
“If you get a suspicious email, do not click any links, do not download any files,” the MOM added.
MOM has also warned the public to be careful of fraudulent phone calls from persons claiming to be from the ministry, asking for names of key personnel in the company and their mobile numbers, on the premise that further instructions on levy support would be sent to them.
“This is a scam. Members of the public who receive such calls should: Be vigilant. If you receive such a call, ignore it; Not transfer any money to the caller, either via remittance agencies, banks or any other means; and Not provide the caller with your personal information such as name, identification number, passport, bank account or credit card details, and OTP,” the ministry said.
“We take such incidents seriously, as they undermine public trust in MOM. If you have information related to such incidents, call the anti-scam hotline at 1800 722 6688,” they added.
MOM said all transactions with the organisation should be done on https://www.mom.gov.sg, and not www.mom-gov-sg.online, which is a fake website.
“We will continue to monitor for such fake websites and work to bring them down. We also remain committed to keeping the official MOM website unaffected and your data safe,” they added.
