Chart of the Day: Fewer Chinese buyers purchased condos in prime districts
This reflected a fall in the share of condos snagged by Chinese buyers in the city.
This chart from EDMUND TIE reveals that the share of condos in traditional prime districts sold to mainland Chinese homebuyers declined to 24% in 2019, compared to 28% in 2019. Still, they remained the top buyers of condos in the region.
Besides foreign buyers of unspecified origin, the country is followed by Indonesians with 12.1% of condo sales, and Malaysians which comprised 9.6%. Other nationalities in Asia and Europe were also involved in sales in the region.
Island-wide, the share of condos sold to mainland Chinese buyers shrank to 27% amongst foreign homebuyers in 2019, compared to 32.9% in 2018. The proportion of foreigner buyers saw a slight uptick in the last two quarters of 2019 at 7% per quarter.
