Retail sales reeled a slight 0.9% in April
Blame the month-on-month slide on slower receipts for motor vehicles and furniture & household equipment.
Motor vehicles contracted 6.3%, the highest among the retail sectors, while furniture & household equipment dipped 3.2%.
The sluggish sales of motor vehicles was significant enough to drag down the whole retail index to negative territory. Excluding motor vehicles, retail sales actually went up 0.8%.
But on a year-on-year basis, retail sales rose 2.2% in April 2012. Excluding motor vehicles, retail sales increased 2.9%.
