Shopee hit 11 million orders on previous 11.11 sale

The e-commerce sector is set to exceed $208b by 2025.

E-commerce platform Shopee hit 11 million orders from its 11.11 sale in 2018, representing a 24 times increase from the first time it was held in 2016.

As the sector is set to exceed $208b by 2025, 30 times its value in 2015, a study by Google and Temasek found that three key groups were found to drive shopping activity on the platform in 11 November: male users, consumers in the rural areas, and senior-aged buyers.

Over the period of 2016 to 2018, male users’ shopping activity has grown twice as fast as that of female users, whilst people outside capital areas showed to shop more actively on the platform, for instance, in Visayas province in the Philippines, Nonthaburi in Thailand, and Banten in Indonesia. Finally, older buyers, aged 50 and above, were observed to increase shopping activity by 30 times.

Shopee announced that on this year’s 11.11 sale, discounts will start applying in seven markets this month until its finale on 11 November.
