PayPal has revealed that the most popular buying categories for last year’s festive shopping season were Fashion, Toys, Auto parts, Sports Equipment and Jewellery.
Its study also showed the top five countries that Singapore online shoppers bought from were United States, China, Great Britain, Hong Kong and Japan.
Noting on Singapore online shoppers' overall shopping patterns, PayPal said more Singapore shoppers are flocking online to get gifts for their loved ones.
"For a wider variety of choices, and items not found locally, many look beyond Singapore’s shores for their online shopping needs," said PayPal.
Between October and December, a traditional festive shopping rush period around the world, PayPal observed a 12% year-on-year increase in purchases made by online shoppers in Singapore from overseas sellers in 2012, compared to the same period in 2011.
PayPal also reckoned Singapore online shoppers also got into a frenzied buying mood during Black Friday and Cyber Monday, a traditionally US-celebrated weekend shopping sale in late November, with sales from US merchants during this period increasing by 21% from 2011 to 2012.
The Black Friday weekend last year also saw a 24% increase in sales from Singapore buyers from the weekend before, it noted.
"The busiest day for Singapore online shoppers last year during the festive season was recorded on 26 November 2012, Cyber Monday, where Singapore buyers were shopping at a rate of 10 transactions per minute from overseas websites," estimated PayPal.
Lawrence Chan, Vice President of Asia Pacific Merchant Services and General Manager for Southeast Asia and India, PayPal said, “During this festive season, local online shoppers planning to get gifts for their friends and families for Christmas, New Year and beyond, are seeing the incredible deals from merchants all around the world, especially during the Black Friday and Cyber Monday long weekend. There is no better time to shop online than during the holidays, especially when they can shop the world from the comfort of their homes and skip the queues.”
