
Here's how retail sales in Singapore fared in August
Retail sales increased 3.2% compared to a year ago.
According to the Department of Statistics, retail sales (seasonally adjusted) increased 0.9% in August 2012 compared to July 2012. Excluding motor vehicles, retail sales rose 0.4%.
Compared to a year ago, retail sales increased 3.2% in August 2012. Excluding motor vehicles, retail sales rose 2.7%.

Month-on-Month Change (Seasonally Adjusted)
After seasonal adjustment, retailers of recreational goods reported an increase in sales of 7.6% in August 2012 compared to the previous month.
Retail sales of wearing apparel & footwear, food & beverages, motor vehicles, petrol service stations, department stores and furniture & household equipment also rose between 1.0% and 5.1% over the same period.
On the other hand, retailers of telecommunications apparatus & computers and watches & jewellery reported declines in sales of 5.5% and 2.7% respectively in August 2012 over July 2012.
Year-on-Year Change
Retail sales of medical goods & toiletries and supermarkets increased 9.1% and 8.2% respectively in August 2012 over August 2011.
Similarly, retailers of wearing apparel & footwear, motor vehicles, petrol service stations, food & beverages, recreational goods, provision & sundry shops, department stores and optical goods & books also registered growth in sales of between 1.6% and 5.7% over the same period.
In contrast, retailers of watches & jewellery reported a 3.2% decline in sales in August 2012 over August 2011.
