
Singapore’s retail sales rise 1.6% in June
Food and beverage sales also increased by 1.5%, according to a report from Singapore's Department of Statistics.
Retail sales in June 2011 went up 10.9% compared to June 2010. Excluding motor vehicles, retail sales increased 10.4%.
Compared to a year ago, food & beverage sales went up 7.8% in June 2011.
Month-on-Month Change
After seasonal adjustment, retailers of telecommunications apparatus & computers, watches & jewellery, motor vehicles, recreational goods and wearing apparel & footwear registered growth in sales, ranging from 3.2% to 10.0% in June 2011 compared to the previous month.
In comparison, retail sales of medical goods & toiletries, furniture & household equipment, optical goods & books and petrol service stations decreased between 3.5% and 6.8% over May 2011.
Year-on-Year Change
Compared to June 2010, retailers of watches & jewellery and telecommunications apparatus & computers recorded increases in sales of 32.9% and 29.5% respectively in June 2011. Retail sales of petrol service stations, wearing apparel & footwear, motor vehicles, food & beverages and provision & sundry shops also recorded double-digit growth ranging from 11.1% to 16.8% in June 2011. Retail sales of recreational goods, department stores and medical goods & toiletries increased between 1.4% and 6.7%.
On the other hand, retailers of optical goods & books, furniture & household equipment and supermarkets reported declines in sales of between 0.7% and 3.9% in June 2011 over June 2010.

Month-on-Month Change
After seasonal adjustment, receipts of restaurants and other eating places, such as cafes and canteens, increased 1.4% and 2.9% respectively in June 2011 compared to the previous month. Turnover of fast food outlets and food caterers decreased 0.5% and 0.4% respectively in June 2011 over May 2011.
Year-on-Year Change
All major segments reported higher turnover in June 2011 compared to the same period in 2010. Turnover of fast food outlets increased 12.0% while receipts of food caterers, restaurants and other eating places went up between 6.3% and 8.4% in June 2011 over June 2010.
