Port of Singapore hits record high container throughput of 37.5 million TEUs
This makes Singapore the top leading maritime city in the world, according to DNV.
The Port of Singapore hit a record high container throughput of 37.5 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) in 2021, retaining its title as the top Leading Maritime City of the World for the fifth consecutive year as per the Norwegian classification society, DNV, and Norwegian consultancy, Menon Economics AS.
Apart from a record high throughput, the port also handled 599.0 million tonnes of cargo last year whilst vessel arrival reached 2.81 billion gross tonnages (GT), and the total tonnage of ships under the Singapore flag stood at 92.3 million GT.
Meanwhile, total bunker sales volume reached 50.04 million tonnes in 2021, of which 49.99 million tonnes were conventional bunkers sales and 0.05 million tonnes were LNG[2] bunker sales. This marks only the second time that bunker sales crossed 50 million tonnes.
S Iswaran, Minister for Transport and Minister-in-charge of Trade Relations, said Singapore will focus on four thrust—resilience, digitalisation, decarbonisation, and talent—to allow Singapore’ maritime industry to emerge even strong.
Meanwhile, Iswaran also reported that the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore awarded close to $3m of funding to eight projects that will allow for the digitalisation of the maritime industry, and will support the effort of SGTraDex in data sharing across bunkering stakeholders.
