MPA, IMarEST to upskill mariners

Ex-seafarers can get degrees from IMarEST and Plymouth University.

Singapore’s maritime professionals will be given opportunities to retrain courtesy of a partnership between the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) and the Institute of Marine Engineering, Science and Technology (IMarEST)

According to Quah Ley Hoon, chief executive of the MPA, this partnership will enhance their manpower development efforts based on the Sea Transport Industry Transformation Map and help workers stay relevant in a rapidly changing maritime industry.

The program will mostly benefit marine surveyors and hydrographers as well as offshore and shore-based workers.

Former seafarers and those without experience will also be allowed to pursue further studies, either through a joint MSc/BSc offer by IMarEST and the UK’s Plymouth University, or a Chartered Status under the IMarEST banner.
